Midterm elections are just right around the corner on November 6th—are you registered?
If you’re not sure, you can check here. And if you’re not, or you need to re-register, don’t worry: You still have time in every single state to register and/or plan if you need to submit an absentee ballot for the Midterms.
That said, some deadlines are approaching soon, depending on the state you live in, so you’ll want to act fast to ensure you’re on the voter rolls. (And even if you think you’re registered, double-check—states like New York and Arkansas have been purging voters from the rolls.)
There are plenty of sites with comprehensive information about voting deadlines and requirements, breakdowns of issues, and
First, if you’re planning on voting absentee, you should know that you do not need a stamp to send in your ballot. “The U.S. Postal Service’s official policy is to deliver all absentee and mail-in ballots, regardless of whether they have proper postage, reports Time. “If there’s no stamp or not enough postage, the Postal Service charges the local board of elections instead.”
Next up, 17 states plus the District of Columbia offer same-day voter registration, according to the National Conference of State Legislators, which means—as you might have guessed—that you can register and vote on the same day. They include: California, Colorado, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Utah, Vermont, Wisconsin and Wyoming. (Note: North Carolina and Maryland make same day registration available during the early voting period but not on Election Day; the 15 other states allow it on Election Day.)
One final thing to note: 16 states and the District of Columbia allow or have passed legislation to allow 16 or 17 year olds to pre-register to vote. They are: California, Colorado, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah and Washington. So if you or your kid are, say, getting a driver’s license soon in one of those states, you can likely pre-register to vote for when you do turn 18.
