![Nyong'o was born in Mexico City, where her family were political refugees.[1][2][3] It is traditional to name a child after the events of the day, so her parents decided to give her a Mexican first name.[4] She is the second of six children.[5] Nyong'o's parents are Dorothy and Peter Anyang' Nyong'o, a politician.[6] Peter was the former Kenyan Minister for Medical Services.
