The Academy for Excellence in Athletics & Academics (Academy) is collaborating with The National Naval Officers Association (NNOA) to help promote and publicized NNOA’s Second Annual Youth Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics (STEM) Day. The event will take place on July 26, 2017 onboard the USS Essex (LHD-2), from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, at the 32nd Street Naval Station, San Diego, CA 92136.
The event will offer disadvantaged and underserved community students unique opportunities to explore prospective career fields within the sea services. Military officers and STEM professionals will be present to mentored students, who will witness the application of STEM within the shipboard and sea service environment. Student participants will learn about college funding options and military training programs. Students will also have the opportunity to engage with ship’s company during a guided tour, learn from sea service leadership, and talk with San Diego area professionals about career opportunities.
NNOA’s Youth STEM Day is free and open to all San Diego County students in grades 8 through 12. NNOA is particularly interested in having 8th and 9th grade students attend the conference. Dr. Johnson said the Academy was helping NNOA publicize the conference “to promote STEM awareness among Southeast San Diego families and to increase the participation of our youth in STEM programs.”
