Hawa Kamara’s debut as Wendy Darling in the touring production of “Peter Pan” is a momentous milestone in her burgeoning career. With the show set to dazzle audiences at Broadway San Diego from July 30 through August 4, Kamara is excited to step into this iconic role and inspire young viewers.
The Chocolate Voice had the opportunity to chat by phone and learn about Kamara’s journey to landing the role of Wendy, which is as enchanting as the story itself.
“It’s an honor to be a role model for young girls watching,” Kamara shares, reflecting on the significance of her debut.
The audition process was a whirlwind of opportunities and unexpected turns. A chance encounter with her college professor, Lonny Price, who is also the director of this production, led to an audition that initially seemed unlikely. Price was a guest professor giving a master class at Emerson College where Kamara was studying for a BFA in Musical Theatre. After reading for various roles, including Lost Boys and pirates, Kamara was asked to prepare for Wendy with just two hours’ notice. Within a week of her semester ending, she was cast in the role, a testament to her talent and determination.
The acting bug bit Kamara early on, thanks to her older sister’s brief foray into theater and a pivotal performance of “The Wiz” during the fourth grade. Balancing her passion for theater with a love for sports, Kamara attended LaGuardia School of Performing Arts, where she honed her craft in a demanding environment inspired by the famed series “Fame.” Her rigorous training emphasized a vital lesson she carries with her: “Trust yourself and the work you’re doing. There is only one you in the world.”
Taking on the role of Wendy Darling in this production has been both a rewarding and challenging experience for Kamara. The character’s contemporary twist allows her to connect with modern audiences, though portraying a younger version of herself poses its own set of challenges.
“It’s like playing onstage with my two younger brothers every day,” she notes, finding both the difficulty and joy in the role.
Kamara resonates deeply with Wendy’s ambition, determination, and compassion. She appreciates how Wendy’s character stands firm in her own decisions, providing a powerful example for audiences to see a strong, independent figure.
For fans eager to be surprised, Kamara promises an immersive experience. “Expect a lot of technological marvels,” she teases, hinting at the magical effects that will bring Tinker Bell and the world of Neverland to life.
Influenced by powerhouse performers like Heather Headley (Aida) and LaChanze (The Color Purple), Kamara has drawn inspiration from their groundbreaking roles. “Seeing strong Black female leads made me think, ‘I wish I could do that one day,’” she reveals. Her mentors and education have been pivotal in her growth, reinforcing her belief in the value of arts education.
Looking ahead, Kamara has ambitious dreams, hoping to one day take on roles in productions such as “Once on This Island,” Eurydice in “Hadestown,” and eventually, Deena Jones in “Dreamgirls.”
On a lighter note, if Kamara could choose an artist to compose the soundtrack of her life, she would opt for an African composer to honor her West African heritage. Her mother is from Liberia, and her father hails from Sierra Leone.
Kamara’s life mantra encapsulates her outlook on life: “What will be will be. Everything is temporary, so be ready for what’s next.”
As Hawa Kamara takes the stage as Wendy Darling, she brings not only her impressive talent but also a heartfelt connection to the role that will undoubtedly captivate and inspire audiences.
