“Power” and “Wu-Tang: An American Saga” actor Marcus Callender just announced the national tour of his upcoming play, “Spades: the Play.” The production brings the beloved Black cultural pastime of playing spades to the stage in an immersive format, offering a fresh and raw approach to theater.
As Callender’s debut as a playwright and director, the 76-show, five-city tour kicks off in September at culturally significant venues in Washington D.C. (Culture House DC), Los Angeles (Amazing Grace Conservatory), Atlanta (Cam Kirk Studios), New Orleans (Fire House Loft) and Miami during Art Basel. A special one-night-only show precedes the tour at the historic Studio Museum in Harlem on Sept. 3. Tickets are available exclusively through Posh today at posh.vip/g/spadestheplay. Additional details will be announced in the coming weeks.
Set in 2013 Harlem, and based on true events in Callender’s life, “Spades: the Play” follows a close-knit group of twenty-somethings as they gather for their weekly spades game at a friend’s house. As the cards are dealt, playful banter turns to honest conversation about love, friendship and the blurred lines between the two. The production stars Broderick Clavery (Extrapolations) as “Gill” and Akilah A. Walker (The Chi) as “Cori,” with Derrick Alexander as “Andre” and Erin Nicole Washington as “Nefertiti.”
