SAN DIEGO, CA – A warm, sunny afternoon set the stage for the Malcolm X Library Gift Day and Soirée, held Saturday, September 20, 2025, at the library parking lot located at 5148 Market Street, San Diego, CA 92114. Visitors and participants enjoyed live music, interactive art exhibits, local vendors, a silent auction, and other festive activities beginning at noon and extending into the evening.

The community event was hosted by the Friends of the Malcolm X Library, a nonprofit volunteer group that advocates for the library, raises funding, and provides critical support for its literary and educational programs.

The noontime “Family Fun Day” commemorated the 100th birthday of Malcolm X, the prominent African American Muslim minister and human rights activist. The Malcolm X Library is the only library of its kind in the nation dedicated to keeping his legacy alive, while also offering residents a dynamic venue for workshops, performances, and access to technology—providing opportunities for connection, discovery, and inspiration for years to come.

Community involvement was strong throughout the day, with a live DJ, opportunity drawings for prizes, inspiring words from 4th District Supervisor Henry Foster, and an informal conversation with centenarian Lelya Sampson, local community activist and retired teacher.

In the evening, the celebration moved indoors for a silent auction, an elegant fashion show, live musical performances, and refreshments for ticketed guests. As one of the organization’s major fundraisers, the event gave community members the chance to invest directly in the success of the library and its literary, educational, and performing arts resources.

The Friends of the Malcolm X Library host a variety of events throughout the year designed to engage adults, seniors, and children alike. Gift Day is one of three annual fundraising efforts, with the goal of raising $10,000 each year to support programs that cultivate imagination and learning across generations.
