The Neighborhood House Association (NHA) rolled out the blue carpet in grand fashion on Saturday, November 23, 2024, transforming the iconic Sails Pavilion at the San Diego Convention Center into an elegant celebration of community, legacy, and impact.
This milestone event marked NHA’s 110th Anniversary, drawing a crowd of dignitaries, philanthropists, and community leaders for an unforgettable evening of glamour and purpose. Under the visionary leadership of President Rudolph Johnson III, the night sparkled with star-studded performances and heartfelt recognition of those championing community service.
A Starry Celebration
Acclaimed jazz violinist Karen Briggs mesmerized the audience with her virtuosity, while the internationally renowned Mariea Antoinette elevated the jazz harp to enchanting new levels. A surprise performance by Andra Day, the multi-award-winning actress and singer-songwriter, capped the evening with soulful brilliance, leaving the audience in awe.
Honoring Excellence
The NHA 2024 Chairperson’s Award went to Stedman Graham, celebrated author, educator, and Oprah Winfrey’s longtime partner, for his dedication to empowerment and education. Jack McGrory, a pillar of San Diego’s public service community, was honored with the prestigious President’s Award. Recognizing grassroots efforts, the 2024 Unsung Hero Award was bestowed upon Yasmina Vinci, executive director of the National Head Start Association, along with San Diego’s HipHop 5K and Business for Good for their transformative community contributions.
Culinary Delights and Distinguished Guests
The evening, co-chaired by Mark Cafferty and Peggy Cooper, tantalized attendees’ palates with a selection of delectable cuisines from San Diego’s finest restaurants. Guests sampled culinary masterpieces from Dobson’s Bar & Restaurant, Havana 1920, Crab Hut, Marisco’s La Chula, Sodexo LIVE!, Nelly’s Kitchen, NHA Culinary Group, and Dell’s Hideout.
Prominent figures in attendance included elected officials San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria , Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe and Congresswoman Sara Jacobs, underscoring the event’s significance in the local community.
A Legacy of Service
From its origins as a settlement house in 1914, NHA has evolved into one of San Diego County’s largest nonprofit social service agencies, touching the lives of thousands each year. With 28 programs operating at 125 locations, NHA provides critical services in early childhood education, mental health, senior care, and youth development. Beyond meeting immediate needs, the organization empowers families and individuals to envision and achieve brighter futures.
